I guess making a repository with the drivers and telling people to add it was too rainbows hard. Something about a timeout being reached when it had to download the packages. Gave the same error it gave when I ran it on Ubuntu. I tried to install latest graphics drivers first with the Intel Graphics driver update utility (tricking it into believing that Mint was Ubuntu 13.04) as described here (yes I am Italian, you can understand what is being done by just looking at what the guy does with the terminal). Or even Unity for that matter.ĭownloaded/installed compiz-config and tried changing all the settings in the OpenGL tab. It can run smoothly Deus Ex (played with it on a friend's netbook with a dual-core Atom), Homeworld and Homeworld Cataclysm with tons of ships which I think are a bit heavier than a desktop and some fancy effects. While I know the CPU is a bit weak, the GMA 3150 is NOT so weak. I understand that a 1001pxd isn't a powerhouse but if Aero works better than linux I started to think there was something going on in Mint. Upgrading to 2 GB of RAM did help a lot when I did it a year ago. Well, there is some lag, but it's there mostly when loading stuff from the drive, and is when doing the same things as when it was on Starter. Windows 7's own Aero interface with all effects enabled and even transparency enabled is pretty smooth. 30 days of trial period before it locks down or does something nasty to my relatives. I thought it was because Unity was too taxing (even if it was supposed to be using the GPU for that), so after I tried updating drivers with the Intel Graphics driver installer (that failed, another story, see later) I installed Mint.įor the sake of testing, made another partition and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. The same happened with Ubuntu 13.04 (before I formatted its partition and installed Mint). I thought that with compiz that stuff was off-loaded to GPU. While this happens, there are spikes of CPU activity (checked from System Monitor). When i move the cursor over the various entries in the menu, it lags behind at least 2-3 entries. I click on the Menu button in the task bar and I have to wait 2-3 seconds before I see the menu popping up. So, the issue is that s the user interface is lagging a lot. I know my way around partitioning so I first shrunk Windows 7's one with a free windows tool, then made a 15-ish GB ext4 and a 1 GB swap partition when installing Mint, and installed it. It's a dual-boot with Windows 7 Starter and Mint cinnamon 15.

A few days ago I installed Mint Cinnamon 15 64-bit on my ASUS 1001pxd netbook (Atom n455 processor 1.6 GHz with HT, GMA 3150 graphics, 2 GB of RAM) hoping to get a better user experience than Windows 7 Starter which is total crap even if you hack it to change some minor things like say the desktop wallpaper.
